The Arizona State health authorities have sounded the alarm over the amount of lead in Paulsen poker chips, triggering an outbreak of panic in the USA.
Between 11 and 20 million of these chips are in circulation in the major casinos, but the problem also affects domestic households in which card games are very popular.
A test carried out on the surface of the chips has revealed high levels of lead, but particles can be released into the air simply by tapping the chips. Lead may then be inhaled at a rate far above the threshold level of 0.06%.
A wave of product recalls is now sweeping the American market. This has aroused a growing feeling of suspicion on the part of consumer organisations which are carrying out multiple tests and analyses and discovering even more dangerous components.
