The FBI investigates gambling in Second Life

The FBI, the American federal law enforcement agency, is currently carrying out an in-depth investigation into gambling establishments and casinos in the popular virtual world known as “Second Life”.

Anticipating trouble ahead, Linden Lab, the creators of the virtual reality game, Second Life, decided to call in the FBI in order to inform them about the proliferation of gambling within their virtual world and to obtain a decision concerning the legality of the gaming and money in circulation, as Linden dollars can be exchanged for real dollars.

The strict measures taken by the American government against online gambling do not bode well for Second Life. Gambling activities in the virtual world could be considered to be illegal and in violation of the “Gambling Business Act”, a law which prohibits the transfer of money relating to online gambling activities.
