The Unibet affair: the European Commission has Belgium in its sights

The European Commission has just requested an explanation from Belgium, following the exclusion of the Unibet cycling team from the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège races.

In fact, Unibet, which sponsors the cycling team of the same name to the tune of 7 million euros per year, has been ousted from several races: the two Belgian competitions, the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, plus the Tour de France and the Giro, because the laws in Belgium and France prohibit the advertising of online betting.

After sending a letter to the Belgian ambassador to the European Union, Charlie McCreevy - the Commissioner in charge of the Internal Market, drew attention to the fact that certain provisions of these laws could be incompatible with the basic treaties of the European Union.

The Commission has asked Belgium to prove that its legislation is applied in a “consistent and systematic manner”.
