Sweden defies the European Commission

Like France, Sweden was sent a letter of formal notice by Brussels last June… What is more, Sweden does not intend to give a favourable response to the European Commission’s injunctions.

Sweden considers that its monopoly complies with its aims of proportionality and the protection of its population from the dangers of gambling.

In opposing the European Commission, Svenske Spel, the Swedish gaming company, is seeking to delay the inevitable liberalisation of its market… In the meantime, the Swedish monopoly continues to generate large profits on its online gaming business.
