Sports betting: William Hill defies the OPAP monopoly in Greece

British bookmaker William Hill has just lodged an appeal with the Greek courts after the dismissal of its request to operate in Greece.

In order to be able to contribute to the creation of an open market, the British betting company William Hill wants to market its activities under the same conditions as the Greek sports betting company (OPAP).

Benefiting from a monopoly situation, the Greek sports betting company (OPAP): one of the largest companies in Greece and which is nearly 35% state-owned, has controlled all sports betting since 1996.

Despite Greece’s obligation to comply with European legislation and open up its market, the request for authorisation submitted by the British betting operator William Hill was rejected, which has earned Athens a letter of formal notice from the European Commissioner for the Internal Market.
