Online gaming: Brussels warns France and Sweden

On Wednesday, the European Commission issued another “letter of formal notice” to France and Sweden and a first warning to Greece for having imposed restrictions on sports betting. This is the final stage before the case is taken to the European Court of Justice.

The European Executive - the guardian of the “freedom of competition” in Europe - has officially given France and Sweden two months’ notice to modify their legislation, which runs counter to the principles of free competition, under penalty of being summoned to appear before the highest Community court.

Under the pretext that gambling is harmful to its citizens, France has banned the involvement of private operators and prevented them entering the market : an act which the Commission considers to be incompatible with European Union legislation.
