Non-European gaming sites banned from advertising in Britain

The British government has introduced a new law on online gaming which bans non-European gaming sites from advertising in Britain. This measure comes into force on 1st September 2007.

Advertising will only be allowed for sites based in the European Economic Area and, exceptionally, in Malta, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man.

Online gaming sites based outside of the European Economic Area will no longer be authorised to advertise in Great Britain, on any media. A thousand or so sites are affected by this ban.

The aim of this measure is to guarantee a high level of website quality, strengthen security, combat money laundering and protect minors.

The British government plans to impose fines and prison sentences for bookmakers who fail to abide by this new law.
