Great Britain – threat to the reform of the legislation on online gaming

For the past 7 years, gambling legislation in the United Kingdom has been seeking to regulate the online gaming market, but recent decisions announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown now seem to signal the end of the reforms that have been undertaken.

Gordon Brown’s team is proposing tax rates of up to 15% - a level considered to be prohibitive - for companies wanting to invest on British soil or for operators who are already established in the United Kingdom, if the rates applied to offshore companies are taken into consideration.

The investment efforts undertaken over the past few years now seem to be jeopardised. Licences granted to major casino operators have been suspended and the decision to lift the ban on the advertising of gambling has also been shelved.

Analysts of the sector propose the imposition of low tax rates of 2 or 3% in order to attract investments by gaming companies.
