The addictions department of the Harvard University School of Medicine has just published a study about the behaviour of people who gamble for money online.
The aim of the study entitled: “Analysing the field of play: a prospective longitudinal study of the behaviour of online sports gamblers” was to study how a sports betting company can promote responsible gambling.
The study was based on data collected from players who had placed sporting bets on the website of Bwin : the Austrian sponsor of the study.
The time spent, frequency of bets and amount of money wagered enabled the two researchers, Howard Shafer and Richard LaBrie, to conclude that “the behaviour of gamblers is influenced by their winnings and losses”. The higher the percentage of losses, the more the urge to gamble diminishes”.
The study reveals that less than 1% of gamblers only can be described as “big gamblers” who wager large sums of money.
