Germany bans online betting websites

In spite of the persistent pressure imposed by the European Commission with a view to opening up the gaming market to competition, 13 out of the 16 German states have ratified a law banning all forms of online betting and online gaming intermediaries.

Since January 1st 2008, the ban has concerned betting websites run by companies based abroad, sites allowing any form of advertising, and money transfer sites, whose operations have even been blocked.
