The Austrian online gaming operator Bwin was 489.8 million euros in the red in the fourth quarter of its financial year 2006. The company is paying the price for the recent American law banning online gambling.
The main cause of these losses was Bwin’s buyout of a poker website that was mainly used by American players.
Furthermore, Bwin has also decided to cease its activities in Turkey, following anti-online gaming laws which had a radical effect on its customer base in the country. According to Bwin’s spokesperson, the closure of its Turkish online betting site could cost the company around 20 million euros per year.
We should also remember that Bwin also made the headlines in 2006, when one of its executives was arrested in France after agreeing a sponsorship contract with AS Monaco football club that was judged to be illegal by the French authorities.
