To prevent any chance of fraud, betting on the BNP Paribas 2007 Tennis Masters tournament, to be held at the Paris Bercy Palais Omnisport from 27 October to 4 November, will be subjected to close scrutiny.
The Française des Jeux (the French State’s sports betting monopoly) has decided not to offer bets on this tournament, but betting remains possible through State lotteries and online bookmakers. An alert has therefore been issued to prevent anyone from accepting excessive bets.
Any unusually large amounts of betting on a particular player will trigger a referral to the French Federation of Tennis.
This is the first time that such a system has been implemented in Europe. Numerous State lotteries have ratified for sports betting code of conduct in order to combat “corruption, cheating, money-laundering and addiction amongst betting supporters”.
Therefore, any player with a proven involvement in rigged betting scandals will be severely punished and a lifetime ban could even be imposed.
